The Sustainable Mobility Hackathon is organised with the aid of the European Union under the project DyMoN (Dynamic Mobility Nudge), It is a two days long hybrid (physical and digital) event coordinated by Sustainability InnoCenter following a Hackers approach to problem solving. The main goal is to identify relevant solutions to proposed sustainability challenges with focus on mobility. All interested participants, parties and partners will form multidisciplinary teams and together create solutions to these challenges.

The Hackathon will be an idea competition with the mission to design, test and implement ideas on everyday challenges faced by some important societal actors. Our goal is to work together and initiate solutions that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The first winning entries will have a unique opportunity to work on their ideas together with partners, and bring their solutions to the next stage.

The Hackathon is a great way to challenge yourself and your creativity, but also an excellent opportunity to meet new people and make connections outside of your usual professional circle. It will definitely be an interesting event regardless of your background and your experience!

Registrations:  Have already started! Final date for registrations is 30th of April 2023. Final event and presentation pitching is on: 11th -12th of May 2023. Where: Uppsala, Green Innovation Park

Background of the DyMoN research project:

Cities face the challenge of promoting sustainable mobility in order to reduce CO2 emissions, improve air quality, reduce noise pollution and so on, thus making cities into more liveable places. To achieve this, cities can use prohibitions and legislation (“hard” measures) on the one hand, and strategies to change citizens’ behaviour (“soft” measures) on the other. Since hard measures are not always effective, nudging is an alternative method to bring about behavioural change. Nudging refers to a method of influencing behaviour, but without the use of restrictions or laws. Nudging builds on findings from behavioural economics and psychology and works by directing attention, changing the environment or through social influences. Nudges can also be used in the area of mobility behaviour.

    • The DyMoN project will enrich digital nudging for more sustainable mobility behaviour with data sources. For example, the situational component is often crucial in nudging (i.e., in which situation a nudge reaches a person). For DyMoN, data such as weather data, environmental data, infrastructure data, or traffic data will be used. This data will be processed in the DyMoN Data Hub and will be linked to the nudging methods. By taking into account the situational components within a city, effective nudges will be designed within the DyMoN framework.
    • Citizens’ involvement is a key component in the project. In DyMoN, the ideas, requirements and opinions of the citizens regarding sustainable mobility are to be included from the beginning and for the development of the nudges.
    • Proof of concepts of the DyMoN framework will take place in Salzburg and Uppsala, in which the effectiveness and flexibility of the framework will be tested.
    • For cities, DyMoN will create a manual for effective digital nudging for active mobility, as well as a data dashboard that can be used to evaluate current conditions in the city. Workshops will give cities the opportunity to learn more about effective nudging and the work in DyMoN.
    • A DyMoN Summer School for young scientists will be also held in order to enable knowledge transfer into research.
